This is our second speaking practice under exam conditions that will take place on one of the following dates in AEN: Monday 12 January, Tuesday 13 January, Wednesday 14 January, Thursday 15 January and Friday 16 January.

Your child’s teacher will have given them the time of the assessment in lesson time. It should also have been recorded in the student’s planner. Your child needs to arrive a couple of minutes before their time to ensure the smooth running of the day and to be in the right mindset.

We will not reschedule the assessment if your child misses it, unless there is a valid reason.

Students (Foundation and Higher) have 15 minutes preparation in the AEN department with an invigilator to prepare for a role-play, a reading aloud text and a photocard before entering the exam room.

The test will last between 7-9 minutes at Foundation level and 10-12 minutes at Higher level.

During the exam, students will be tested in the following order:

1.         The role play

2.         The reading aloud task, followed by a short unprepared conversation related to the topic of the task.

3.         The photo card.  After students have spoken about the content of two photos, they will be asked conversation questions related to any of the topics within the theme

Students in French will be tested on the following themes:

  • Theme 1: People and lifestyle (Topic 1: Identity and relationships with others / Topic 2: Healthy living and lifestyle / Topic 3: Education and work)
  • Theme 2: Popular culture (Topic 4: Free-time activities)
  • Theme 3 (Topic 7: Travel and Tourism / Topic 9: The environment and where people live)

Students in Spanish will be tested on the following themes:

  • Theme 1: People and lifestyle (Topic 1: Identity and relationships with others / Topic 2: Healthy living and lifestyle / Topic 3: Education and work)
  • Theme 2: Popular culture (Topic 4: Free-time activities / Topic 5: Customs, festivals & celebrations / Topic 6: Celebrity culture)

Students have prepared their answers to those conversation questions in their speaking folder and need to memorise them. They are expected to be fully ready on the day of their test. You could support your child by asking them the questions in French/Spanish. You could also ask him/her to translate back in French/Spanish to test their understanding and/or students could record themselves and listen to their answers to help them with the learning.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
