“You will have setbacks, but never give up!”

Ed Miliband

Guest Speakers Ed Miliband and Justine Thornton kindly gave up their morning to visit Acland Burghley School on Thursday 3 December to present a talk to sixth form students and a small group of Y8s on having goals, building resilience and overcoming setbacks, which are key themes for our pupils at Acland Burghley.

Students walked away from the talk feeling inspired and excited about the tips for success raised by the power couple, “I learnt that you have to aim high and have a target even though your targets might change” Thomas, 8AAL.

Ed described how he came into politics with his own “values” guiding his decision making process. He moved students with his honest reflections, “you will have setbacks, but never give up!” Ed engaged with pupils on issues they felt strongly about and guided them to “ask for help and advice from, teachers, friends and family” when overcoming their own setbacks and establishing new goals.

Justine spoke sincerely about her time at school and how she began building her own confidence from a very young age. She detailed times throughout her career when she had to say to herself, “hang on a minute – I can do this” showing determination and courage.  Shelliy, 8EOT reflected on Justine’s talk saying: “I learnt how to be resilient.  I would like to be a lawyer and Justine gave me confidence to become what I want to be.”

Dorothy, 8AAL now has the strength of mind to succeed, “no matter where you come from you can achieve, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t”.

Both were given a fantastic tour by Khaula, 8ECO and Teagun, 8AAL of our wonderful school observing lessons. Ed and Justine thanked staff and students for a warm reception and great questions on twitter.
