Come Celebrate Burghley’s Brutalist Beauty 28 June

All Acland Burghley families are invited to a one-off event on Wednesday 28 June. We will be holding a book launch in the assembly hall for a new publication on Acland Burghley’s famous architects. The launch is part of the London Festival of Architecture.

We are co-hosting the event with Historic England, who gave Burghley a “Grade II listing” last year. This means it can’t be knocked down because it is of special architectural interest. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there are now very few “Brutalist” schools left in England.

Burghley was built by the architects Howell, Killick, Patridge and Amis in 1966. It was the only school they ever built. They went on to design the Young Vic theatre on London’s South Bank and several colleges in Oxford and Cambridge.

The new book on HKPA is by Geraint Franklin, who gave a fantastic tour of the school when we held our Open House event last September. He will be doing another tour on the night of the launch, starting at 5.30pm. The main event starts at 6.30pm, during which there will be an illustrated talk by the author and then refreshments until 8.30pm.

We will also be launching our fundraising to improve the assembly hall. Families and supporters of Burghley will have the chance to fund a chair for the hall to replace the tired green ones we have had for years, which we will then use in a less public area.

The new chairs are the start of making the hall a more inviting space for everyone. We would love them to be in some of the colours of the Acland Burghley logo. The plan is to gradually bring the assembly hall back to its original state, which was described by English Heritage as “a brutalist gem”! It also had a backstage area and allegedly brilliant acoustics. We are working with Camden council to make our vision come to life. Watch this space…

If you would like to come to the launch, please send an email by Wednesday 21 June to Louise.Portsmouth@Historic.England.org.uk. Please also say if you would like to go on the tour.

We really hope to see you there.

Parent Governor
